We’re a vibrant community of passionate Torontonians who love local eats AND the planet. We believe that our individual actions do matter, and that together, we can change the world!
We are piloting Toronto’s first zero waste food app. Imagine ordering takeout that doesn’t compromise your love for food or the planet? Imagine returning the reusable containers while out walking your dog or heading to the grocery store? Imagine earning rewards for taking action! We believe that our choices have the power to positively impact future generations 🙂
Quite simply, Inwit exists as a result of our global reliance on single-use items and a disconnection from the waste we generate. Waste is a complex problem that many of us believe can be solved through recycling. However, even with the best intentions and systems in place, we only manage to recycle 11% of the plastic we consume.
In Canada, the restaurant industry is generating billions single-use takeout containers annually. This wastes finite resources, contaminates our recycling system, endangers our ecosystems and impacts our health – all in the name of convenience.
This is why we’re making takeout circular and zero waste! We offer solutions to help independent restaurants lead the change here in the city.
Inwit is an old English word that means our inward understanding of right and wrong, inner wisdom or the wisdom within us…our conscience.
We believe it is our conscience, which will move society forward, especially toward environmental protection and circularity. At Inwit, we believe the answer lives within each one of us.
Inwit was made by Torontonians, for Torontonians and we care. We care deeply about you, our restaurant partners and the planet.
Traditional food apps provide a platform to generate sales for restaurants. They generally charge very high fees for restaurants and users, promote a linear economy, and still require restaurants to purchase single-use takeout containers which can cost independent businesses upward of $18,000- $35,000 per year. With billions of single-use takeout containers contaminating our planet each and every year, there is little concern for humans or planetary heath.
In contrast, we offer a convenient way to order takeout online that takes restaurants, community and the planet into consideration. Our fees are much lower than traditional apps and we only charge a 3% user borrowing fee. In addition, we promote a circular economy and provide restaurants with reusable containers so they can transition away from expensive single-use containers.
We know that the best way toward a sustainable, circular future is if businesses start taking people and the planet into consideration. At Inwit, we are deeply committed to playing a role in driving that change. We’ve created an affordable model and equipped restaurants with our reusable containers. We also provide ongoing training and support that helps them incorporate sustainable practices into their every day operations. Why? So they can lead the change here in Toronto!
We are offering a pickup model only for our pilot, however, we are exploring several options for sustainable and fair delivery. We will keep you up to date, but for now, grab your sunnies, good vibes, and enjoy the walk!
It’s super easy! Create an Inwit account from your preferred device (laptop, tablet, cell, etc). Scroll through our restaurant partners and choose the one that speaks to your craving. Browse their menu, select your delicious food items and then checkout. You’ll then receive an email confirmation (to the email address you registered for an account with). Simple as that!
When the restaurant prepares your order, the food will be placed in our beautiful, stainless steel, reusable containers for pickup instead of a single-use container.
When you are done, simply return it within 7 days. It can then be dropped off at a Contactless Return Station in any of our participating restaurant locations.
After you’ve enjoyed your meal, out of courtesy for the restaurant, we ask that you give the container a good rinse (please make sure there is no food left in it).
Then, simply place the rinsed containers into a Contactless Return Station at any participating location. Your account will be adjusted once they are sanitized and placed back in circulation (within 24 hours). Please do not hand our containers to restaurant staff or leave them on the counter. We rely on all parties to ensure a contactless experience for all 🙂
We have done a lot of research on circularity and life cycle assessments (which look at the CO2 of a product in all its stages — from resource extraction, manufacturing, packaging, distribution, retail, consumer use and then end of life management). What we found was that a paper bag actually has three times more impact (and carbon) than a plastic bag.
The problem is not simply the material, but rather the way we use it. Products we create just to use for moments and then throw away (single-use) are highly problematic. Avoiding single-use is the first step we can take to start transitioning to a low carbon future.
Put simply, each time you enjoy takeout without waste and return our containers, you are fighting climate change and supporting a circular and green economy.
Our containers need to be reused 500 times to be a real sustainable option, so the faster you return our containers, the more waste we can avert together.
You can borrow a maximum of two orders worth of containers at one time. To borrow additional containers, you’ll need to clear up your account by returning our containers to a Contactless Return Station at any participating restaurant location.
This limit helps to ensure we have a steady flow of containers available for new orders. By returning borrowed containers, you are contributing to a truly circular system and ensuring that other members of your community can also order low waste takeout!
Great question! Containers can be borrowed for up to 7 days (1 week).
We trust our community and will not be charging late fees at this time, however, borrowed containers that are kept for more than one week will be marked as lost. For each lost container, you will be charged a $29 replacement fee.
In order to facilitate a circular system, our containers will need to be returned and reused. We hope to get each container back in circulation as quickly as possible so they can continue being heroes in the community by averting waste and contributing to our collective impact!
We are all human and understand that things happen. If you’ve found a lost container please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll see what we can do.
Our partners wash, sanitize and put them back into circulation, however, out of courtesy to our lovely restaurant partners, we ask you to give it a quick rinse and to make sure there is no food left inside.
Our containers are equipped with Near Field Communication tags (NFC) that help us verify when borrowed containers are returned, and from which account they were returned. When you return a borrowed container to any participating restaurant location, it will be scanned back into our system and your account will be updated within 24 hours. Together, we are closing the loop!
Impact Points are rewards earned when you cast your vote for a greener tomorrow. You’ll earn 20 Impact Points (ip) for every dollar spent on our platform. In addition, you’ll also earn Impact Points when returning Inwit containers to any participating location!
The sooner you return your container(s) the more Impact Points you’ll earn! Why? Because the faster we get them back, the more waste we can avert together!

Our system was built with circularity in mind, and at this moment we’re not retailing our containers. Please enjoy them when you order takeout from your favourite local spots, and then remember to return them so we can continue making a difference and averting waste!
Our containers are made from 75% recycled stainless steel. They are designed to be reused up to 10,000 times. They are also 100% recyclable and will never be downcycled.
Our lids are made from triton & food grade silicone. Unfortunately, our lids cannot currently be placed in the Blue Bin because they are made from triton & food grade silicone. They can be reused up to 5000 times, and we are partnering with Terracycle Canada to ensure they get a second life.
Today, our containers are sourced from China. By choosing to takeout with us, you’re helping us reach our goal of having the power of choice regarding where and how we manufacture. We have big plans to manufacture locally.
No! Our containers are made from stainless steel. Metal cannot be placed in the microwave as it can start a fire. Never place Inwit containers in the microwave.
We will need to replace each lost container in our inventory to keep reducing waste. A $29 replacement fee will be charged for each lost container to ensure we continue offering a low waste option to the community.
We understand that accidents happen. If one or more pieces of the container are missing or damaged, please contact us at email@example.com with the email used to register for your Inwit account.
We will arrange retrieval of the container and charge you a fee for the itemized missing/damaged pieces as follows: complete lid $10, silicon edge $5, Silicon button $1, base $15. For each fee, local applicable taxes will apply.
We understand that mistakes happen. Please send us an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with the email used to register for your Inwit account. We are a community and are always here to help. If we are able to place the container back into circulation, only a $4.99 administrative fee will be charged to your account.
Please remember that every Inwit container in our system is averting waste and ultimately creating a better tomorrow 🙂
In the event that there is an outstanding balance or overdue borrowed containers on your account, a hold will be placed until this is cleared up. Once all of your borrowed containers are returned and any overdue balances are paid, the hold will be removed and you’ll be able to place your next order 🙂
We are very passionate when it comes to waste reduction, and we thank you for your patience and support as we work hard to get from low waste to 100% zero waste. Right now during our pilot, we offer our 36oz signature Inwit container. This will help us understand the logistical and operational requirements of adding a variety of container options that will enable us to expand our offerings and provide a truly circular and zero waste system.
Thank you for helping us make this change in society and helping to build a bridge to zero waste, together.
Waste reduction is something that is important to all of us! You can fill out a Waste Report Form to help us track and improve your experience. It can be found in your account under “Orders & Waste Report”.
Life in the hospitality industry can be hectic, and has relied on single-use items for many years. Our restaurant partners believe in the importance of waste reduction and want to bring this vital change to the industry. However, habits are difficult to change; they require time, patience and love. You can also add some kind and mindful notes thanking them for being part of Inwit and trying to avoid as much waste as possible. This will make your favourite local restaurant feel loved while encouraging them to keep working on waste reduction.
